Word of the year Manual & Workbook

A WORD OF THE YEAR is a word (or sometimes a two-word phrase) that represents your motto/mantra for the year.  It is a way for you to be intentional about becoming better in the new year.

Many people use them to help them motivate themselves.

Learn about how this resource came about.

I created this resource to help people use their word more effectively.  This resource is Christian based, but I feel that it will help anyone who wants to use it.

There is the manual and a workbook.

Learning About Using a Word of the Year

I discovered using a WORD OF THE YEAR in 2018 when I began my faith journaling journey.  Read more about that here.

The people in a group I was in was talking about choosing their WORD OF THE YEAR at the end of 2018.  I became intrigued and decided to look into it.  I found it to be a useful tool.  As I usually do… I tool what the people in the group said, and what I learned in my research and took it and made it my own by creating a system to use the word.

A WORD OF THE YEAR is a word (or sometimes a two-word phrase) that represents your motto/mantra for the year.  It is a way for you to be intentional about becoming better in the new year.

My word for 2019 was purpose.  (The word was inspired through 2018 being a rough year and I had to keep reminding myself that I had a purpose for all that I was doing.  So, I felt that 2019 would be a year that I remembered, redefined, renewed, and reinvigorated my purpose in all areas of my life.)

My word for 2020 was vision. (Oddly enough, I did not even realize that 2020 would be 20/20 vision.  It came to me as I was working on my writing project. (Learn more about my writing here.)  The word was inspired by Habakkuk 2:2. I had a vision to complete a project, and I wanted to be intentional with that endeavor, so I wanted to remind myself that I had a vision to complete.)

My word for this year (2021) is intentional. It was that time of year again, people in many of the groups I was in was talking about their word of the year.  I was unable to even write for personal projects in 2020 once the pandemic hit.  I was somewhat hurt by this, but the writing I did in 2020 was spiritual.  So, once again, I decided to complete the writing project once again.  I was doing something else and I heard the song “Intentional” by Travis Greene begin to play in my head.  I brushed it off, but then, the song kept playing in my head over and over for a week.  After that, my word was intentional.  I want to be intentional with everything I say and do.

Long story… right…

Well, it was in 2020 that many people in the groups I was in was asking… “How can I effectively use my word of the year?”

It was in that moment, that I felt lead to share my process with the groups.  So, I did.

Now, I am sharing it with you.  There is the manual and a workbook.

Get it here. Using Your Word of the Year

SOAP Bible Study Method...

I  have created a page that you can use for Bible Study.  It contains the SOAP method of Bible Study.

WHAT DOES S.O.A.P. MEAN?

S– The S stands for Scripture- you physically write out the scripture……you’ll be amazed that what God will reveal to you just by taking the time to slow down and actually write out what you are reading!

O– The O stands for observation- what do you see in the verses that you’re reading? Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you?

A– The A stands for Application- this is when God’s Word becomes personal. What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my own personal life? What changes do I need to make? Is there an action that I need to take?

P– And finally P stands for Prayer. Pray God’s Word back to Him. If He has revealed something to you during this time in His Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life.

Studying God’s Word like this can take as little or as long as you have time to give. Some days it can take just 10 or 15 minutes, other days longer.

Again... My thoughts:  I discovered this method when I began my Faith/Bible Journaling journey.  It was a method used in the Happy Planner Faith line.  I enjoyed using it.  It is very popular and most people are familiar with it.  It is easy to use.

Self-Care Checklist

I am a firm believer in self-care.  You must take care of yourself.

Parker Palmer says it best… “Self-care is never a selfish act—it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.”

With this thought in mind, I have created two self-care lists.  One is Christian based and has self-care acts that remind you of God’s goodness.  The other is non-Christian based and has self-care that remind you that you matter.

The Christian based list was created for a group that catered to women, so that is why it is so “girly.” J

Tips for Journaling with Psalms

  1. Choose a Verse or Passage: Select a Psalm that resonates with your current life situation, emotion, or need. You can use a devotional guide, a concordance, or a random selection to find a verse or passage to journal with.
  2. Read and Meditate: Read the selected Psalm slowly and meditatively. Reflect on its meaning, message, and implications for your life. Pay attention to the words, phrases, and images that stand out to you.
  3. Journal and Pray: Write down your thoughts, feelings, and insights in a journal. Use your own words and style to express yourself authentically. You can also write a prayer or a response to God based on the Psalm. Pray for God's guidance, wisdom, and grace to apply the Psalm to your life.
  4. Reflect and Apply: Take time to reflect on your journaling experience. Review what you have written and look for patterns, themes, or areas of growth. Identify ways to apply the Psalm to your life, relationships, or circumstances. Take action steps based on your insights and commitments.

Journaling with Psalms is a powerful way to deepen your spiritual life, process your emotions, connect with God, and find meaning and purpose in life. By incorporating this practice into your daily routine, you can experience greater joy, peace, and growth in all areas of your life.
